Methodism: Myths, Memories and HistoriesTalk/workshop
Dr Bernard Deacon and Dr Garry Tregidga Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter
This session will investigate some popular myths about Methodism in Cornwall. In particular, how was Cornish Methodism ‘Cornish’? We will compare nineteenth century biographical and census material with oral testimonies of twentieth century Methodism to assess different approaches to Cornwall’s religious heritage.

Cornwall has always had a strong cultural identity – captured and illustrated by the extraordinary range of objects in the RIC’s collections. This workshop will explore the issue of contemporary collecting with particular reference to Cornwall. What should the RIC be collecting in order to record and present the stories of today’s Cornwall? RCM staff will present and facilitate a workshop which considers this fascinating area of collecting

The museum’s Philbrick gallery displays artworks from the permanent collection. The displays are changed each year, bringing out different paintings and sculptures for visitors to see. Come and hear about the choice of works in this year’s display.

Using the art gallery for inspiration this drawing workshop for adults looks at artists’ approaches to capturing light and the use of light to create different moods and effects within paintings.

The Royal Cornwall Museum’s Botanical Collection includes important herbaria (collections of pressed plants) not yet accessible to the public. Based on a pilot project between ICS and RCM staff, this session illustrates the value of collections research and the ways in which it can enhance access to difficult collections.

Knowledge Transfer, the Museum and the AcademyOne-day Symposium

Bringing the Knowledge Transfer Project to a close, the symposium will be one both of reflection and looking forward. Exploring the implications of partnerships between ‘the museum’ and academic communities, the day will look at examples of these in practice and will help develop critical perspectives on the role of heritage in modern Cornwall. Consideration will also be given to a provisional agenda for the future of such partnerships
