Romi Behrens

50 years of painting

Romi Behrens had no formal art training but what she may have lost out on there could, perhaps, have been her making. Her work is marked by an instinctiveness, sponaneity and natural confidence in both form and composition. The lightness of touch and subtle humour pervading her work bely the seriousness and passion of her intent. Although Romi's main influences are Spanish and French, giving her work strength and vitality, it is Cornwall and the Cornish countryside that have been the source of her inspiration.

This exhibition shows some of Romi's earliest and also most recent work spanning 50 years.

"Romi's portraits are microcosms of sheer delight. The intensity of her pleasure communicates instantly and the rapidity of her application is hard-pressed to keep up with the fleeting nature of her intuition and insight. With the confidence and knowledge Roni displays in her maturity, areas of canvas now speak for themselves in her paintings. This paradoxically increases the completeness, with the sitter spot-lit in a spontaneous blaze of brushwork and colour placed on an immaculate white ground. However beyond exuberance, Romi carries into her work an essential humility and it is this quality that brings her to ever greater heights asa portraitist." Jeremy Le Grice, Artist.
