Poldark's Cornwall - The Life and Times of Winston Graham

Exhibition Gallery 1

”Welcome to Cornwall… the year is 1780, and the political and social atmosphere is as stormy as the sea that pounds the rocky shores.“ So starts the BBC’s introduction to its classic 1970s Poldark television series, based upon the novels by Winston Graham. How accurate were these novels in the exploration of life, love, smuggling and murder? Who was the real George Warleggan and where is Nampara?

Full of artefacts of the period, the Graham centenary exhibition looks at the background research and gets under the skin of this love of Cornwall. Other works by this famous prolific author – including ‘Marnie’ which was later filmed by Sir Alfred Hitchcock – will also be explored.
