New Expressions Photography Project

Young people worked with professional photographers to interpret stories behind the museum's collections in new exciting ways. These images have revamped the museum and will be on display until October 30th 2009, so please do come to see the results!

As well as developing technical photography skills, those involved worked in teams to create a range of photographs that are being retained in the museum's collections for future generations to enjoy. Some also undertook the Arts Award as part of the project.

To see more of this project, have a look at the group's Facebook page.

The project was awarded as part of New Expressions, a major new programme from MLA South West - the regional agency for museums, libraries and archives. More than £150,000 was handed to ten museums through the initiative, which is also supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

New Expressions opened up new dialogues between audiences, contemporary artists and the wealth of historical material held in the region’s museums.

Reinterpreting the Collections: Re-collection

For the second year running, the museum has worked in collaborations with Third Year BA (Hons) students from University College Falmouth’s Contemporary Crafts course to experiment with ways to make the museum more appealing to young people. They took their inspiration from the museum’s collections, investigating, researching and interpreting individual objects. This process resulted in a variety of contemporary crafts that are exhibited within the museum’s permanent galleries. The museum is fostering the exchange of learning and critique between the students and local young people, the former gaining experience in teaching the latter their technical skills, whilst the latter provide feedback on the students’ success in creating interpretations that appeal today’s youth. Please see our Facebook page if you would like to see the installations and comment.

The exhibition will run until 30th October 2009.
