Young People

Youth Advisory Panel –'empowered to advise'

The Royal Cornwall Museum’s Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) will consist of young people meeting regularly to have their say on what happens for their age group in the museum. It will be a productive group where young people will play an active role in making sure that our museum is fun and interesting.

The group will help to plan activities offered for young people, making sure they are exciting, interesting and what they want to do. They will also have opportunities to get involved in many other aspects of our work, including consultation for the upcoming redisplay of the museum. There will be opportunities to go behind the scenes and to get involved with other projects and activities, depending on members’ particular interests, as well as special events and activities.

If you are aged 16-26 and interested in joining the Youth Advisory Panel please click here to download a contact sheet, fill it in and return it by e-mail or by post to:

Reinterpreting the Collections: Inspiring Today’s Youth Partnership project between RCM and UCF

Inspired by the museum’s collections, Contemporary Crafts, Spatial Design, Textiles and Illustration degree course students from University College Falmouth have created new youthful works of art and designs. Come and see a selection of them in the galleries from 21st June to 30th December 2008. If you are aged 16-26, help us to judge them by joining our Youth Advisory Panel.

A highlight of this project was the OBJECT+IDEA+INSPIRATION=OBJECT exhibition by Contemporary Crafts students earlier this year. Exhibits included Slave Chain, a modern day interpretation of the Delftware Tulip Vase which reveals the part slavery played in its creation, and Bebo Bully that was inspired by the Rialton Stone. Joanne Stambridge made the piece by taking a cast of her fourteen year old daughter’s back and visually exploring the contemporary issue of internet bullying.

Professor Alan Livingstone, Principal of University College Falmouth, launched the exhibition: ‘This represents an important step forward for both the museum and the college. The students benefit from being able to display their work in an environment that is synonymous with great works of art and the museum benefits by introducing new modes of presentation, attracting young audiences and looking to the future.’

We also displayed new designs for the museum that were created by UCF’s Spatial Design students following consultation with several groups of local people who were unfamiliar with the museum.
