Young People

The museum tailors projects specifically for Young People (16-26 years). To get involved, contact Louise McDermott (01872 242784).

Revealing Collections Exhibition

During 2009-11, University College Falmouth students, local young people from Platform 51 and Truro College Creative and Media Diploma students exposed the museum's rarely seen collections and provided us with fresh provocative interpretations. The exhibition of their work included contemporary crafts and dance, digital animation and photography, all focussing discussions on the objects which inspired them and related sexual issues. The exhibition is now closed but you can see some of the project on Facebook.

To follow 2nd year Choreography students work towards the exhibition go to www.facebook.com/elbowroomdance.

Objects of Inspiration

Each year the museum collaborates with BA (Hons) students from University College Falmouth. They are challenged with interpreting the museum's collections in ways that will appeal to young people. To find out more about the project, read our case study and visit our Facebook page.

New Expressions

During 2009, young people worked with professional photographers to interpret stories behind the museum's collections in new exciting ways. These images revamped the museum and were displayed near the objects that inspired them.

As well as developing technical photography skills, those involved worked in teams to create a range of photographs that have been retained in the museum's collections for future generations to enjoy. Some also undertook the Arts Award as part of the project. To see more of this project, have a look at the group's Facebook page.

The project was awarded as part of New Expressions, a major new programme from MLA South West - the regional agency for museums, libraries and archives. More than £150,000 was handed to ten museums through the initiative, which is also supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

New Expressions opened up new dialogues between audiences, contemporary artists and the wealth of historical material held in the region’s museums.
